Bootham Crescent, York City
v Yeovil Town, Division 3
Saturday, April 20th, 3pm

By Dan Spiller

The game was of the utmost importance to both clubs involved. York realistically needed to win to keep any chance of survival alive and Yeovil needed the points to rejuvenate their play-off hopes. As a result the locals were really up for the game and for a crowd of just over 2000 generated as a fair bit of passionate support. The 193 Yeovil fans, although supportive struggled to make a lot of noise in the away terrace. Partly because of the tension level and partly because the terrace was uncovered.

Lowly York surprisingly took an early lead and this really pumped up the home crowd. The first half belonged to York who lead one-nil at the interval. Yeovil came out in a seemingly more positive frame of mind after the break and quickly got back on level terms with a goal from Paul Terry. To Yorks credit they replied with plenty of pressure boosted by chants of "attack, attack, attack". But once Yeovil took the lead in the 75th minute the York fans and players alike seemed surrendered to a season in the conference. Yeovil comfortably played out the remaining time.

The ground itself is fairly basic. The away terrace is uncovered but there is room for plenty of traveling fans. There is small section of the popular stand open to away fans at a cost of an additional pound upon entering the ground. The popular stand runs along the side of the pitch to the left of the away terrace. A higher stand runs opposite this but only runs around two thirds of the length of the pitch. The home terrace is where the majority of noise came from, it is fairly large with seemingly good acoustics.

Parking at York is similar to Plainmoor in as much as it is all street parking. Although the crowd was only of around 2,500 I found it reasonably difficult to find a space. Many of the roads around the ground are for permit holders only. I managed to find a space close to the home end. I recommend you get to the ground ASAP. I believe there are public car parks in the local area but by all accounts they charge the earth.

I found the York fans to be most friendly, they offered me help on finding a parking space and I experienced very few negative comments which was commendable considering the implications of their defeat. The stewards kept their distance and showed no hostility towards us.

Food at the ground includes pies, chips and mushy peas, burgers, hot dogs and chocolate bars. All reasonably priced and perfectly appetising.

I hope York bounce back from their likely relegation, they will be a lost to the football league.

Tips=Yeovil fans seemed quite welcome in the social club before and after the game. There are plenty of other pubs and hotels around the ground.
