What's Newport Stadium Like?

The stadium is primarily an athletics one which is council owned and run. On one side is the Grandstand, which although it looks pretty uninspiring from the outside the stadium, when viewed from the car park, it does look more attractive once inside. The stand is single tiered and has a capacity of 1,100 seats. It has a large cantilevered roof and a windshield to one side. It runs for around half the length of the pitch straddling the half way line. Opposite is a covered terrace, known as the Shed (or Velodrome side) which sits astride the half way line.

Both ends are open seated areas, which are of a temporary nature by construction. The larger of these ends is the 1,200 capacity Spytty Road End. Opposite is the Cricket Club End, which has a capacity of 950 and houses the away fans. Beyond this end the skyline is dominated by a couple of wind turbines. To one side of the Grandstand is the brightly coloured club shop. The stadium is shared with Welsh League Two side Llanwern FC. The stadium is completed with a set of four modern looking floodlights.

What Is It Like For Visiting Supporters?

Away fans are housed in the temporary Cricket Club End at one end of the stadium, where up to 900 fans can be accommodated. Although all seated, this stand does not have a roof, so pray that it does not rain. However, it is located close to the pitch and you are not sitting behind the athletics track, so the view is pretty good. Still it is difficult for away fans to really generate any atmosphere from this area.

Inside the stadium, refreshments on offer include the usual Burgers (£3), Hot Dogs (£3), Chips (£1.50 or with curry sauce £2). But alas no pies.... (although I have been informed that BarAmber has a selection inside). Look out for the Club mascot who has the intriguing name of Spytty the Dog (named after the Spytty Park area that the stadium is built upon - but don't get too close just in case he was so named for another more obvious reason!)

Where To Drink?

At the stadium itself is the popular BarAmber, which normally admits non-members including away fans for a nominal fee. The bar has Sky Sports and offers a range of food too. Adam Hodson a visiting Stockport County fan adds; 'On our visit away fans were not allowed into BarAmber. Instead we found the Newport Cricket Club behind the Away End which kindly admitted us into its bar.'

Otherwise there aren't (as far as I could see) any other pubs nearby, as the stadium is located on an industrial estate. If arriving by train then it may be an idea to drink in the centre of town before moving onto the stadium.

How To Get There And Where To Park

Leave the M4 at Junction 24 and take the A48 towards Newport. Cross over five roundabouts (the fourth of which has a KFC outlet on the left and the fifth and last roundabout has an Aldi store on the same side) continuing towards Newport and you will see the stadium over on the left hand side. Take the next left into Langland Way and then left again into the large stadium car park which is free. If the car park is full then there is street parking to be had on the surrounding industrial estate. If you end up crossing over the River Usk then you have gone too far. The stadium is signposted around the area as the Newport International Sports Village (also shown on brown signs as a figure of a discus thrower).

Adam Hodson a visiting Stockport County fan adds; 'For fans travelling down from the North and the Midlands, it may be a good idea to use the M5 to Junction 8, then the M50 (signposted South Wales), A40, A449 and then onto the A48 for Newport and the stadium. This way you don't need to use the M4.' Plus after you leave the M5 it is a more scenic route too!

Exiting the car park after the game:

As there is only one exit from the car park then it takes a while for everyone to leave at the end of the game. Also if you are going back towards the M4, then on exiting the car park you need to turn left (rather than right as you might expect, as you'll then find that you can't turn right back onto the A48), then at the T-junction turn right and then right again at the traffic lights onto the A48.

By Train
Newport railway station is situated around two and half miles away from the stadium. It is served by trains from London Paddington & Bristol Temple Meads. As the stadium is located quite a distance away in may be an idea to take a taxi. There is a rank outside the station and a taxi should cost around
£6-£7.

Tim Washbrook adds; 'You can reach the stadium by bus and the bus station is only a five minute walk away from the railway station. At the bus station you need stand 25. The number 43 bus (Moorland Park) will stop opposite the ground and will take around 15 minutes, these run approximately every half hour. There is also another service which is the number 44 bus (Nash College) which stops at the same place, and is every hour. There is an alternative, the number 42 bus (Spytty Park), though the nearest stop to the ground is just off the 5th roundabout mentioned in the directions by car above, so involves a short walk and a little directional knowledge. This also runs approximately every half hour. To get back to the centre, there are bus stops opposite the drop-off ones on both routes. However, this time the number 42 bus stops outside the ground, whereas the number 43 bus stops on the alternative route (the opposite to the outward journey mentioned above). Both buses run approximately every half hour up to 7pm, then approximately every hour until 11pm. The number 44 also stops outside the ground, but this stops running after 6pm.'
